Move over apple, fish is what’s keeping the doctors away now! Fish has long being considered as “brain food”, thanks to high concentration of Omega 3 fatty acids.
However, new research is revealing that it does a lot more than just make you smarter.
Omega 3 is being used in health supplements, and is recommended by fitness trainers, physicians, and health and wellness experts the world over as an essential part of a balanced diet.
Besides, there is a ton of research pointing to the potential health benefits that you stand to reap by eating more fish, here are a few of them…
Reduces the Risk of Heart Disease
As heart disease is the leading cause of death among US adults, fish can be a potential cure, if taken regularly. In a Danish study of 49,000 women that was published in Hypertension: Journal of the American Heart Association, it was reported that women who ate fish at least once per week cut back their risk of heart disease by 50%.
In an analysis of several studies by Dariush Mozaffarian and Eric Rimm, it was noted that eating fatty fish with an omega 3 acid content of 2 grams reduced a person’s chances of dying from heart disease by 36%, and general mortality rate by 17%.
Reduces the Probability of Alzheimer’s Disease
People with Alzheimer’s disease have lower levels of a protein called LR11 or SorLA, which helps to clear the brain of beta-amyloid precursor protein which creates beta-amyloid plaques that block neuro-transmitters. 15% of the human population also carries a genetic predisposition towards reduced LR11 production. LR11 Fish oil which is rich in DHA (docosahexaenoic acid)can lead to an increased production of LR11 in the brain, thereby reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s.
Tackles Depression and Anxiety
In 1998, a report published in the Journal of Affective Disorder detailed that people with depression had significantly reduced Omega 3 fatty acids in their blood. Another study by Nieminen LR, Makino KK, Mehta N, et al which included 18 healthy men and 34 men with depression, alcoholism or both revealed that deficiency in Omega-3 can increase the chances of depression.
The researchers looked into the relationship between plasma levels of essential fatty acids and neurosteriods that are associated with mood swings and depression. In subjects with lower levels of Omega 3, higher levels of neurosteroids were observed.
Protects and Improves Your Skin
Lack of essential fats can cause your skin to look dry and dull. Omega 3 is the type of fat that your skin and hair need to stay nourished and healthy. There is some evidence to suggest that Omega 3 can also help people with skin condition such as psoriasis.
Gives You a Shot of Vitamin D
Saltwater fish is a good source of Vitamin D which promotes healthy bones, boosts your immune system, and reduces the risk of cancer. Salmon, Trout and Mackerel are all great sources of Vitamin D and just a 3 ounce serving can provide 75% of your daily requirement.
