HEALTH NOTES: The center of chocolate’s health benefits are flavonoids. Dark chocolate retains more flavonoids than other varieties of chocolate such as milk chocolate, white chocolate, cocoa or chocolate syrup. New research has also determined that eating a diet high in flavonoids helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Now don’t get excited yet and claim chocolate your new “health food”. Chocolate still contains a fair amount of fat and sugar so moderation is always best.
Here are some tips when choosing chocolate:
To get the biggest flavonoid bang for your buck, choose Dark Chocolate with at least 70 percent coco content. Avoid chocolate candies made with hydrogenated fats or refined flours. Also pass on products labeled “artificial chocolate” or “chocolate flavored.”
ENJOY!
